The Number Resource Organization Confirms Commitment to the Working Group on Internet Governance
The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has pledged USD 50,000 to the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG), as part of its continued commitment to this working group and the overall World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process.
The main activity of the WGIG is to investigate issues and make proposals for action relating to Internet governance in preparation for the second phase of the WSIS in 2005. This working group was set up as a result of the first phase of the WSIS, held in Geneva in December 2003, in order to continue the dialogue on issues of Internet governance.
“The NRO wants to support the work done in the WGIG to ensure a positive outcome that benefits the global Internet community,” said Paul Wilson, NRO Chair. “We are keen to support an open working group where all relevant stakeholders are represented equally”.
From 20-21 September 2004, a consultation was held in Geneva to develop a common understanding of the structure and functioning of the WGIG. Discussions were focused on the scope and working methods of the WGIG, as well as the general profile, qualities and characteristics of its members.
About the Number Resource Organization (NRO)
Formed by the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) to formalise their co-operative efforts, the NRO exists to protect the unallocated Number Resource pool, to promote and protect the bottom-up policy development process, and to act as a focal point for Internet community input into the RIR system.
