The Number Resource Organization (NRO) is pleased to announce that it has increased its financial contribution to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) to US$100,000.
The contribution was formally accepted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs on 28 August 2026. It will support the activities of the IGF and its Secretariat as the Forum continues to provide an open, inclusive and global platform for dialogue on Internet governance.
The NRO welcomes the decision contained in the United Nations’ WSIS+20 outcome document to establish the IGF as a permanent forum of the United Nations, with its Secretariat hosted by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs on a stable and sustainable basis and supported by appropriate staffing and resources.
The outcome document recognizes the IGF as the primary multistakeholder platform for discussing Internet governance issues. It also calls for the strengthening of the IGF Secretariat, sustainable funding for the Forum, greater support for national and regional initiatives, and broader participation by stakeholders from developing countries and underrepresented communities.
The NRO’s increased contribution reflects the commitment of the five Regional Internet Registries to the multistakeholder model of Internet governance and to the IGF’s role in bringing together governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical and academic communities, and Internet users from all regions.
Establishing the IGF as a permanent forum represents an important achievement for the global Internet community. Its long-term success, however, will require stable and predictable support. The NRO therefore encourages organizations and stakeholders across the Internet community to contribute financial and other resources to help the IGF fulfil its permanent mandate and continue strengthening inclusive participation in Internet governance.

The Number Resource Organization is the coordinating body for the five Regional Internet Registries: AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC and the RIPE NCC. The NRO works to promote and protect the open, stable and secure operation of the Internet number resource system and supports the participation of the RIR communities in global Internet governance.
