Executives of organizations responsible for coordination of the Internet technical infrastructure met for 2 days in London, UK, to consider current issues affecting the future of the Internet. All 5 RIRs were represented at this meeting.
During the London meeting, significant time was spent in discussion of the IANA Stewardship Transition process, and we noted the following:
- The huge multistakeholder effort that we have seen in developing the IANA stewardship transition plan is unprecedented. Our respective communities have worked intensively to consolidate proposals in response to the NTIA announcement of March 2014. We recognize these efforts as exemplary, reflecting the value of what a multistakeholder process can produce.
- In accordance with the NTIA’s expectations, and with the fundamental ethic of bottom-up, open and inclusive governance processes, it is important to reaffirm our common commitment to preserve the will of the community in the administration of number resources.
- While we understand the uncertainties related to the final acceptance of the proposal for IANA transition, we are committed to this process and look forward with optimism to a successful stewardship transition.
We believe that distributed stability is an essential goal of Internet technical operations and governance structures. There is no single organization, particular jurisdiction, or specific function that can guarantee global functioning of the Internet: the Internet’s strength and future rely upon its distributed architecture.
Like our peer and collaborating organisations, the Regional Internet Registries continue to be committed to globally coherent Internet operations, in support of a secure, stable and trusted global infrastructure.
