Dear Dr. Twomey,

Progress report on the African Network Information Center (AFRINIC)

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) is pleased to present you and the ICANN Board of Directors an updated report detailing the activities and progress of AFRINIC’s transition to being recognized as a new Regional Internet Registry (RIR).

Since 21 February 2005, and as stated in the most recent NRO report to ICANN, AFRINIC has provided Internet registry services to its region’s Local Internet Registries and end-users in anticipation of final recognition by ICANN as an RIR in April 2005.

The NRO has carefully reviewed AFRINIC’s facilities, operations, and processes, in accordance to the guidelines and principles documented in the ICANN ASO MoU and the IANA ICP-2 (“Criteria for Establishment of New Regional Internet Registries”). From this evaluation, the NRO has determined that AFRINIC meets satisfactory performance standards and fulfills the requirements for the operation as an RIR

Based on the AFRINIC’s progress in establishing operations and the significant efforts undertaken to accomplish the transition plan, the NRO strongly supports an ICANN Board resolution to recognize AFRINIC as the fifth RIR.

Sincerely yours,

Axel Pawlik Adiel A. Akplogan
Chair, NRO Chief Executive Officer, AFRINIC
